The Problem of Deceptive Prophecies in Modern Churches and Social Media
In recent times, a troubling trend has emerged within churches and especially on social media platforms. Although I don’t claim to be a prophet, I’ve been closely observing prophetic ministries for nearly two decades. Have you come across statements that seem overly ambiguous, such as:
- “God just told me that everyone here is being blessed.”
- “God just told me everyone here is getting a wife or a husband!”
- “God says no one here is going to die!”
- “God says anyone who types Amen is moving into a new mansion!”
- Some would even go further, saying, “I see you getting a car or a house,” leaving us to wonder who they are addressing. These statements are often vague and ambiguous, merely designed to excite the crowd.
The list of such ambiguous supposed prophecies continues endlessly. The question arises: if you claim to be a prophet who hears directly from God, why make such vague posts on Facebook or similar platforms? See, God is typically specific!
If you peruse the Scriptures and the records of prophets, you’ll find that they rarely deliver prophecies in this manner. Every genuine prophecy must have a clear recipient or address.
So, don’t resort to gimmicks or rely solely on your sensations in the name of prophesying. Perhaps, God hasn’t spoken to you at all; maybe you just want to speak to garner likes or attention.
If you make general statements in the name of God and one fails, you’ve effectively delivered a false prophecy. Many people lack the fear of God; they are quick to declare, “The Lord said,” when He hasn’t spoken at all.
Let’s stop treating the prophetic as a game and start taking it more seriously. Let’s learn a lesson from the warnings of ancient prophets:
“Jeremiah 23:21 (KJV) – I have not sent these prophets, yet they ran: I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied.”
“Ezekiel 13:6-9 (KJV) – 6 They have seen vanity and lying divination, saying, The LORD saith: and the LORD hath not sent them: and they have made others to hope that they would confirm the word.
7 Have ye not seen a vain vision, and have ye not spoken a lying divination, whereas ye say, The LORD saith it; albeit I have not spoken?
8 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because ye have spoken vanity, and seen lies, therefore, behold, I am against you, saith the Lord GOD.
9 And mine hand shall be upon the prophets that see vanity, and that divine lies: they shall not be in the assembly of my people, neither shall they be written in the writing of the house of Israel, neither shall they enter into the land of Israel; and ye shall know that I am the Lord GOD.”
